Ease of use takes top priority
A
s IT increasingly
has become a
vital part of the security industry, usability and
simple, smart solutions has gained traction. Us-
ability, apps, remote access and simplicity; they
are all associated. Usability means many things.
It is about thinking how and why people use a
certain product. What are the user's goals? Ease
of use also relies on feedback from the user, not
only the expertise of the manufacturer. The elec-
tronic security business has traditionally been
driven by the suppliers rather than the buyers.
This is changing and the fact that ease of use of-
ten takes top priority is a proof of this ongoing
transformation.
Smart, simple solutions was perhaps the ma-
jor product trend at this year's Ifsec in Birming-
ham, where an increasing number of security
applications connected to smart phones was on
display. There were also many demonstrations of
solutions based on NFC (Near Field Commu-
nication) and a multitude of user-friendly apps.
The same thing is expected in the next major
upcoming security show: Security Essen, 25-28
September.
In this issue, Detektor explores some of the
main trends for access control. One of them
is NFC. According to Senior Research Ana-
lyst Blake Kozak, IMS Research, as the access
control industry moves forward, there will be
a greater emphasis on flexibility and offerings.
"NFC and access control as a service will not
be used by every end user; however, there the
ability for all these devices and technologies to
work seamlessly is the future of access control",
he says.
The winners of Detektor International Award
will be presented with their awards at the Secu-
rity Banquet during Skydd in Stockholm on the
evening of September 19th. Ease of use is a main
benefit for many of the nominated products. For
example, the multi-functional Iclass SE Readers
from HID can be updated with software in or-
der to meet the demands for different card tech-
nologies and the Axis Camera Companion takes
away the need for a central DVR, NVR, PC or
server all video is stored in the cameras and the
end user can access the cameras through his tab-
let or smart phone. Raytec's Vario LED lighting
for CCTV systems comes with interchangeable
lensing and a hand held remote control, which
makes it easy to use.
Detektor International has also recently
met up with Massimo Grassi, Stanley Black
& Decker's European President for security
to discuss the integration of Niscayah and the
future. He says, with Niscayah the company
has an extraordinary opportunity to build a pan
European leader in security. On September 12,
Niscayah will change the brand name to Stanley
Security Solutions. This means Stanley will
become a player of great importance, not only in
America but also in Europe.
Another interesting fact in this issue is that
Hikvision is the new market leader for video
surveillance equipment and that Axis has be-
come the new market leader for security cameras
(including analogue as well as network cameras).
