Genetec is privately owned.
Do you think it is an advan -
tage in comparison to being
a public company?
A huge advantage. I have seen
some of our competitors being
run by accountants as soon as
they started to get investors.
We are run by product-people
and spend a lot on R&D, we
don't capitalise our profits. It
is an important thing, and we
have been profitable since the
beginning, not outrageously, but
we have always been profitable
because we are conservative. You
don't see us flap around in the
wind like you see some of our
competitors because they have
to care for the investor constitu-
ency. Instead we care for our
customers, for the employees
and the environment. Being
independent means enormous
freedom to make long-term
decisions. n
But in very large systems, the
cost probably goes down by 37
percent a year. It is really in large
data centres that you are able to
realise those gains. And the cloud
is necessary sometimes. We had
a particular situation when the
police went to one of our airports
and had a court order and said
"we want to have all of your videos
for the last 30 days". It was 2.3
petabytes. We said, "yes, where
are we going to put it? How many
floppy disks do we need?" This
sounds funny, but actually it is a
real problem. What our custom-
ers do in this case is that they
issue visas, a kind of conditional
authorisation, to give access to
the law-enforcement agencies
when they need it. Also it is not
the airport that pays for it, if the
law-enforcement agencies want it,
then it comes out of their budget.
So, visas enable us, and we have
live cases of this today.
tion of services based on today's
scalable technology?
I am not entirely sure about all of
the security industry, but certainly
for us. We are very much a service
company. The software is quite
an important component and it
can now be purchased as a service.
We are not only already doing
that; we are already doing that in
many instances. How long will it
take for the rest of the industry
to move there? Not entirely sure
about that.
The cloud is an obvious resource
in a security as a service (SaaS)
concept, in what kind of appli-
cation is the cloud most useful
for the customers?
The larger your system, the more
reasons you have to use a cloud
solution. Moore's law doesn't ap-
ply so much to your smartphone.
It still applies, but the cost is not
so much the cost of computing.
we are not the only software com-
ponent in this. So we are working
with Microsoft on one such pro-
ject. Microsoft has a large software
component. The city contracted us
to work with Microsoft to test the
combination of our two softwares
in the cloud. We don't physically
install the cameras, we manage
the upgrades, the back-ups and
the integration between us and
the Microsoft software, so if we
break something we have to fix it
and we can actually test this in the
cloud before a production version
is deployed. Now, we are not only
going to test small subsystems
but also full-scale systems before
deployment and we can only do
this in the cloud.
How long will it take before
security companies leave their
product oriented business mod-
els to become service based and
offer customers a complete solu-
the VMS market
