Summing up 2012
2
012 is almost at
an end, and now
looking back, there are several significant factors
that can really sum up the year for the security
industry.
Let's start with the security shows. Through-
out 2012, from ISC West and Ifsec to Security
Essen this year's product trends have been
clear. Within video surveillance, the trend
towards better image quality has been evident.
Sony's Ipela Engine with the capability to record
60 frames per second in full HD (1920x1080)
and the industry's first 130dB wide dynamic
range in full HD quality at 30 frames per second
is perhaps the best example of this. Ipela Engine
consequently won the Best Product award at the
Detektor International Awards.
Ease of use is another strong trend, and
smart, simple solutions, often connected to
smart phones has been prominent at this year's
big security shows. And this applies both to
access control and alarm and detection as well
as video surveillance. Using a mobile phone
with NFC (Near Field Communication) as a
contactless credential for access control is gain-
ing traction, and at Security Essen, HID had a
representative from Vodafone in place on the
stand to show NFC solutions for access control
products. It will be very exciting to see if and
when NFC will break through.
Security Essen celebrated its 20th anni-
versary in September with more than 39,000
trade visitors and 1,086 exhibitors. Over 35
percent of the trade visitors came from abroad
and there was a strong international presence
amongst the exhibitors accounting for some 46
percent. Essen was a success and it was without
doubt the biggest security show in 2012. In
this issue, you can read everything about the
fair and about some of the products that were
on display.
Detektor has also spoken with senior man-
agement from a few niche specialist product
manufacturers. One American, Pixim, one Euro-
pean, Veracity and one Asian, Etherwan. They
have all grasped the opportunities that have
arisen through the rapid technnological develop-
ment over recent years and have diversified into
new markets. As a result the security arena is be-
ing enhanced with niche specialist products not
traditionally associated with the industry.
In the last couple of years, more and more
alarms have begun to communicate via GSM
and IP, but analogue telephone alarm transmis-
sion is still a very common way to communicate
alarms. In this issue, Detektor looks in more
depth at alarm communication.
A large part of this magazine is also devoted
to the Detektor International Award. Sony, HID
and Cias were each presented with their awards
for this year's best security products at the
Skydd-dinner in Stockholm on September 19th.
Finally, on behalf of all of us at Detektor
magazine, I would like to take the opportunity
to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy
New Year.
