Editor's comment
Birmingham calling
“As everybody is talking about the crisis in the Middle East and the effects of the tsunami in Japan, the organiser of Ifsec is preparing to receive security industry people from all over the world. Once again this event is destined to be disrupted by unwelcome surprises of a political or environmental nature.”
Trends
Video surveillance trends for 2011
The HD trend will continue but 3D will not gain mass acceptance amongst vendors and end users during 2011. Also, there is great long-term potential for video analysis providers to expand beyond the constraints of the security industry. These are a few of the main trends for video surveillance 2011, as listed by IMS Research.
The Interview
Peter Ainsworth, Senior Product Manager, Samsung Techwin
Samsung Techwin released some 170 products during 2010 and their aggressive product introduction strategy will continue. During 2011, IP products will be a major focus. It can be argued that Samsung is in a catch up situation when it comes to IP, but Senior Product Manager Peter Ainsworth is confident the company has not missed the train.
Technology in Application
Valletta Grand Harbor benefits from IP surveillance system
Valletta Grand Harbor is busy every day and a project implementing more than 50 pieces of 3 megapixel security cameras and scalable back-end support system was required and installed at the terminal gate. As an EU Member State since 2004, as well as the impact of 9/11 attack, Malta needs to provide a secure trading spot and ensure the world that it is an internationally safe region at all times.
Security Technology Market
1.1 million security cameras sold globally through retail channels in 2010
Video door phones are no longer just only a method of entry. Now, remote viewing is possible through a smart phone and visitors can use an embedded SD card to record a video message if the occupier does not answer. Since the recording can be triggered by a motion detector in the video door phone, the system has turned into a security product. But this is not communicated to the end users, argues a report from IMS Research.
